It's hard to believe Tuckman's essay is nearly 60 years old. I like how The Wisdom of Teams (Katzenbach & Smith) acknowledged there's a state before 'forming' (the condition in which a group is not yet a team, they distinguish between a 'potential team' and a 'real team'). But other than that, Tuckman's work has held up.

I validate the pre-forming state completely and will reference Katzenbach & Smith to understand what you mentioned fully. Edgar Schein covers how organizations have a chance to form teams better based on a very interesting case study.
