In short: I think this is just Project Management keeping their hold on the software industry, without adding anything of value. Just picking up the AA's own failure to develop as a credible source of insights, knowledge and development for the software industry.
Fundamentally, project management is a failed intellectual "project" when it comes to managing the development large scale software systems. I don't think PMI will change that, because the central mental models they espouse are inadequate for software.

But both organizations find themselves in untenable positions: AA's finances are limited due to a business model wholly reliant on conference revenues in a work-from-home world; meanwhile PMI's content has limited appeal because their PMBOK lacks an authentic expertise in an increasingly VUCA world.
Both organizations appear to have reach the same conclusion: if you can't beat them, join them.
